Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of awareness about emerging infectious diseases (EID), ethical awareness, and decision-making in responding to EID among Korea Armed Forces Nursing Academy (KAFNA) cadets, and to identify their relationship.

Methods: KAFNA cadets participated in this cross-sectional survey. The structured questionnaire consisted of 41 questions about awareness about EID, ethical awareness, decision-making, and general characteristics of participants.
Results: The average score of awareness, and ethical awareness were 3.67¡¾0.33, and 4.17¡¾0.38 out of 5. The average rate of answering questions about ethical decision-making was 92.0%. Ethical decision-making was positively correlated with both awareness about EID (r=.14, p=.016), and ethical awareness (r=.22, p<.001). In addition, there was significantly positive correlation between awareness and the ethical awareness (r=.38, p<.001).

Conclusion: Based on the study results, an education program for KAFNA cadets to improve the awareness about EID and ethical awareness is needed to enhance the ethical decision-making in response to future pandemic outbreaks of EID.
